RE: Slide outs on tent trailers

Thanks folks, you've convinced us ! Its the Starcraft for us. Out of interest, how are trailer tents in cold weather ? The one we are looking to buy has got a furnace but we are planning a 6 month trip round BC starting in mid-April so its going to be a bit chilly at first.

RE: Slide outs on tent trailers

The salesman who told us slide outs leaked was trying to sell us a trailer tent with no slide out so I'm hoping it was just salesman talk !!

Slide outs on tent trailers

Well, we've practically decided now on Starcraft 2407 - we do have one question though, and that is about slide outs. The 2407 has a slide out dinette but we were told today at an RV show that slide outs on tent trailers have a tendancy to leak - it would be good to hear from anyone who owns a tent trailer with a slide out as to ease of setting it up and whether it is water tight !! Thanks Vicki

Quiet Okanagan campsites - April - Electric hookups

Me and my husband are planning to take a 5 month camping tour round BC (popping in to Alberta on the way !) To make the most of the season, we are planning to start out in early-to-mid-April and we are thinking that we will head off to the Okanagan region for hopefully the better weather in the province. Does anyone know of any quiet campsites that offer electric hook ups and that are open from April ?? I have had a good look on the internet but I am finding that the campsites with hook ups tend to be the more 'built up' sites - we are looking for a more peaceful time and don't need things like swimming pools, entertainment etc. We have no kids, its just us two and our dog. Any suggestions?:)

RE: Which trailer – choice of 3 ?

Thanks for the help. We have pretty much decided now on a Starcraft tent trailer weighing 2200lb with water tanks full. We found out we coulnd't have a weight distribution hitch fitted so a travel trailer is definitely out for us. By the way, I got an email direct from a trailer manufacturer (Sun Valley) who confirmed that teh weight posted inside the trailer is the weight of that trailer as it leaves the factory. Once again, thanks for all the helpful advice. vicki

RE: Which trailer tent?

Thanks for the advice - its just me, my husband and our dog (and 2 kayaks !). Our Endeavour has a GCWR of about 8500 lbs - and a GVWR is 5351 lbs – our car weighs about 3,900 lbs (I think !). Im guessing you have to take the weight of the car from the GVWR to get your carrying capacity including hitch weight ???

Which trailer tent?

Thanks to some very helpful people on this forum, we are now convinced that our car is not up to towing a travel trailer. We are going looking at trailer tents this weekend. We are complete novices. Any advice as to what to look for / what floorplans work best etc. Any recommendations as to good makes of trailer tent? Our max tow capacity on our car (Mitsubishi Endeavour) is 3500lbs. What max dry weight do you think we could go up to? Maybe 2000lbs? :@

RE: Which trailer – choice of 3 ?

Thanks again for the comments. The dry weights I noted above are the dry weights taken from the sticker inside each trailer and Im working on the understanding that this is the weight of that particular trailer as it stands including any options. That's what the RV salesmen were saying !!

RE: Which trailer – choice of 3 ?

Thanks for the comments, my tow vehicle is a Mitsubishi Endeavour so its a mid-sized SUV - does that make a difference ?

Which trailer – choice of 3 ?

OK, so we have narrowed our choices down to 3 travel trailers – all of which we like and all of which are in the same price region. We would welcome any comments from anyone who has experience / knowledge of the following trailers and would be glad to hear from anyone as to whether we are ok on the weight issue : * Fun Finder X189 FD (18 foot long) – dry weight 2660 (Hitch weight 250 lb) * Surveyor SP 187 (18 foot long) – dry weight 2790 (Hitch weight 225lb) * Trail Cruiser (21 foot long) – dry weight 3000. (Hitch weight approx 350lb) Our preference is the Trail Cruiser as it is that bit longer and so gives us much more room inside (it is also 8 foot wide compared to 7 ½ for the Fun Finder and Surveyor). However, it is that little bit heavier in terms of both hitch weight and overall dry weight. Our max tow capacity is 3,500lb and our GCWR is about 8500 lbs and our GVWR is 5351 lbs – our car weighs about 3,900 lbs. So, we have worked out that from the GVWR - taking off weight of the car, the hitch weight of the heaviest trailer (350) and the weight of me and my husband (and our kayaks) that would leave us with 500lb room in our GVWR for food, clothes, supplies etc. Does that sound reasonable or not ? Any comments gratefully received as we are in a dilemma as to which one to buy !!

RE: Towing capacity

Ok, so i'm confused !! Joe, Im afraid what you said doesnt make sense to me ! I have checked the manual for our car - the GVWR is 2427KG and the GCWR is 3854 kg. Our towing capacity is listed as 1587KG So, the GVWR is for the car and its occupants and cargo - and the GCWR is for the car, the cargo, the trailer and the contents of both ? Is that right ?? Do you have to subtract the actual weight of the car from the GCWR of does the GCWR simply refer to the max carrying capacity for the tow vehicle, trailer and the contents of both ?? Aaahhhh - never knew this would be so complicated ! I must be missing something.

Towing capacity

Thanks to some very helpful posts, we have now eliminated several trailers as options as they are too heavy (our max tow capacity is 3,500lb) but I do have a question: When calculating the weight you can tow, do you have to include the weight you are carrying in your vehicle (like the passengers and any equipment you store in there) - or, is it just the weight of your trailer and the stuff in your trailer that you have to take into account ???

RV Dealers in BC

Does anyone know of any RV Dealers in the BC area that carry light weight trailers? I have found several trailers that match our needs - Road Runners, X treme series, Bantam Flier etc but I am having real trouble finding any local RV dealers that carry those lines. We live in North Vancouver but are willing to travel a bit to find the right trailer. Any help greatly appreciated.

RE: Help on choosing the right trailer

Thanks so much for all the advice. One thing I'm not sure about - when working out how much you can tow, do you have to take into account the weight that you pack inside your car or is it just the weight of the trailer and whats inside it ?:?

Help on choosing the right trailer

Hi, Me and my husband are about to make our first travel trailer purchase. We have done some research but we are complete novices. We are looking at a Surveyor SP187 which is for sale for $17,000 CAN (a 2008 model). Does anyone have any experience/ knowledge about this make or model of trailer? We are quite limited on our choice as our car only tows 3,500lbs. Anyone know of any other manufacturers that make light weight trailers? Would be grateful to hear from anyone with some advice as we really are in the dark. Thanks Vicki and Dean
